The address can be correct and the deposit can still miss your exchange balance. Where a platform shares an address among customers, the MEMO or destination tag tells it which customer to credit. Treat a required identifier as part of the destination, not as a note to yourself.
Why do some deposits need two fields?
A custody platform may use one blockchain address for many customers. The memo, tag or payment ID tells its internal system which account should receive the deposit. The blockchain validates the address; the platform performs the account assignment.
Networks and services use different names. Always follow the labels on the current Binance deposit page rather than a generic list.
How do you copy a memo safely?
Select the asset and network on the destination first. Copy the address and extra identifier separately. Paste each into the matching field on the sending platform, then compare the complete values.
Do not put a required destination tag into a private note field. A note stored only by the sender is not transmitted to the receiving platform.
For example, an address-book label such as “My exchange” helps you recognize a saved entry, but it does not replace the destination tag field. If the sending form offers only a label and no required identifier field, stop and consult its official instructions. Do not combine the tag with the address or place it in an unrelated field just to get past the form.
How can you tell whether it is required?
The deposit page should state the requirement and display the value. If no memo appears, do not invent one. If the withdrawal form warns that the receiving service may need a tag, return to the destination and confirm.
Wallet-to-wallet transfers may work differently from deposits to an exchange. The receiving interface is the authority for its own account mapping. Some identifiers are numeric, others are text, and the permitted form depends on the network. Preserve the value exactly as displayed; do not remove leading characters, add spaces or guess from an old transfer.
What happens when the memo is missing?
The chain can show success while the account balance stays unchanged. Find the TxID and verify the address, network, asset and amount. For a Binance deposit, follow the official missing or incorrect MEMO recovery instructions when available in your account.
Recovery is a platform process and may not be available. Do not send a second deposit with a memo as a supposed “unlock fee.”
What if the tag belongs to another account?
Treat it as an urgent account-crediting issue. Preserve the transaction record and contact the receiving platform from the affected account. Do not contact the apparent recipient directly using information found online.
Provide only evidence requested in the official case. Passwords, verification codes and seed phrases are never recovery evidence.
A four-part transfer check
- Same asset on both pages.
- Same network on both pages.
- Complete destination address matches.
- Memo or tag copied exactly when shown.
Complete all four before authorizing the withdrawal. Save a non-sensitive record of the fields for reconciliation, and use a small test when appropriate.
